00200 COMPUTER SIMULATION OF PARANOIA

00600	1. AIM AND SCOPE
00700 This monograph describes a computer simulation of
00800	paranoid processes as they appear in a psychiatric interview.
00900	The aim of the book is to present the simulation model in detail
01000	along with background information necessary for understanding
01100	the strategy of simulation. How the model works and how it is
01200	tested for validation is described at length. The intended audience
01300	consists of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, workers in
01400	artificial intelligence and behavioral scientists interested
01500	in the simulation of thought processes.
01600
01700	2. SPECIAL FEATURES
01800	(a) The paranoid model represents the first successful simulation
01900	of a psychopathological process achieved. It has been subjected
02000	to, and passed, indistinguishability tests in which its performance
02100	is compared to the performance of actual paranoid patients in a
02200	diagnostic psychiatric interview.
02300	(b) Casting a theory in the form of a simulation model is
02400	a relatively new method in the behavioral sciences. This model
02500	represents a new explanation of paranoid processes in
02600	symbol-processing terms. The theory is a cognitive-affective
02700	one in which a strategy of forestalling humiliation plays a central role.
02800	(c) Previous and current theories of paranoia are reviewed and
02900	evaluated for their coherence and testability. The model itself
03000	represents the most recent advance in the field.
03100	(d) Testing and validating models of psychopathology has not
03200	been extensively discussed in the literature presenting an actual
03300	example of such a model as illustration. Since the model simulates
03400	the linguistic behavior of paranoid patients in a psychiatric
03500	interview, the problems of machine understanding of natural
03600	language are faced and workable solutions adequate for the model
03700	are proposed.
03800	(e) An explanation of paranoid processes is offered in
03900	symbol-processing terms. An algorithm for generating behavior
04000	characterized as paranoid is described in detail.
04100	(f) Up to February 1974.
04200	(g) Examples of the model's interview behavior are presented
04300	extensively along with examples of interview behavior of
04400	paranoid patients.
04500	(h) Since the book is unique, no.
04600	(i) Yes. For the past four years I have given lectures about
04700	the paranoid model here at Stanford and at several universities
04800	in the country.
04900	(j) Chapter 2 is of special importance since it provides
05000	background information for those unfamiliar with the concepts
05100	and terms of the symbol-processing approach. Also Chapter 6
05200	is special because it discusses the difficult problem of
05300	validation procedures for simulation models.
05400
05500	3. COMPARISON WITH COMPETITIVE BOOKS
05600 The only slightly competitive book is one I co-edited
05700	with Schank (COMPUTER MODELS OF THOUGHT AND LANGUAGE, Schank, R.
05800	and Colby, K.M., W.H. Freeman, San Francisco, 1973). It sells
05900	for $13.50. This book will sell very well among graduate students.
06000	In this volume ten leading figures in the field describe their
06100	work. In my chapter the paranoid model is described briefly.
06200	Those interested in a more detailed treatment of the paranoid
06300	model will buy COMPUTER SIMULATION OF PARANOIA. There exists
06400	no other competition in the field.
06500
06600	4. PERSONAL DETAILS
06700 Kenneth Mark Colby. I have an M.D. from Yale University.
06800	I am a Senior Research Associate in Computer Science at
06900	Stanford University and I am a Career Scientist sponsored
07000	by the National Institute of Mental Health. I am a U.S. citizen
07100	born in Naugatuck, Connecticut on January 12, 1920.
07200	5. COURSES
07300	(a) This book can be used as a supplementary text and reference book
07400	in courses in cognitive psychology, artifificial intelligence,
07500	computer simulation, and information-processing psychiatric research.
07600	(b) The 10 co-authors of the Schank and Colby volume will
07700	recommend the book to their students.
07800	6. EDUCATIONAL MARKET
07900 No. The book is too advanced and specialized to be a text.
08000	7. MARKET FOR INDIVIDUAL SALES
08100	(a) Scholars and scientists will study this book. Because it is
08200	historically unique, because it intersectc two black arts (psychiatry
08300	and artificial intelligence), and because Pergamon will do a fine
08400	publishing job, this book will become a collector's item.
08500	(b) The American Psychiatric Association and the American
08600	Psychological Association. The way to reach these memberships
08700	is to run ads in the American Journal of Psychiatry, the Archives
08800	of General Psychiatry, the American Psycholigist, and Contemporary
08900	Psychology.
09000	(c) No. I regret I know no one in Australia and New Zealand.
09100	(d) Philosophy, linguistics, methodology of science.
09200	(e) Perhaps but I'm not sure this is very effective promotionally.
09300	8. INDUSTRIAL SALES
09400	(a) No.
09500	(b) No.
09600	(c) No.
09700	9. REVIEWS AND ADS
09800	(a) In addition to those listed in (7) above, I would consider
09900	the following: Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Comprehensive
10000	Psychiatry, Journal of Psychiatric Research, International
10100	Journal of Psychiatry, British Journal of Psychiatry, British
10200	Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Science,
10300	Scientific American, Science, Nature.
10400	(b) I don't know anyone in this category.
10500	(c) See (7) above.
